The use of Danpatherm K7 for heights of over 12 metres allowed the Zoetis factory to signal its presence in the middle of the Belgian Louvain-la-Neuve science park, while also letting in a bit of natural light.
“Finding the way to allow light penetrate into factories is an ongoing theme for our firm that has worked on various sites for the veterinary pharmaceuticals company, Zoetis, for quite a few years”, comments Joël Meersseman, architect in the Belgian architectural firm, Syntaxe, in charge of the 2,600 m² extension to a production site for animal vaccines. Indeed, if natural lighting is to be privileged for the comfort and well-being of the employees, it is not necessarily compatible with industrial activities. In fact, on the Zoetis site for this extension, vaccine production requires white rooms, perfectly hermetic and opaque boxes.
Despite this sanitary and architectural constraint, the architectural firm was able to integrate a Danpatherm K7 Cristal wall of over 12-metre height, in a single span and traversing two stories of the factory. “Behind the Danpatherm wall, on R+2, one finds the trussed beam that is the bearing structure and on R+1, the technical spaces in which the technicians can work without interrupting production on the ground floor”, adds the architect. In this way, these spaces benefit from natural light during the day and retain a limited level of transparency at nightfall.
“Our industrial client wanted to preserve its privacy but also materialise its presence on the site as the industrial activity continues day and night, and Zoetis is an important actor in the science park”, adds Joël Meersseman. Lastly, thanks to its self-supporting structure, the Danpatherm K7 does not add weight to the structure and above all “was assembled very quickly. An indispensable prerequisite as most of the construction time was needed for the installation of the production line. A simple and quick facade solution was necessary for the over 12-metre heights, with no intermediary joints!”
