Cinema vue : A KEY CINEMA Gateshead Trinity Square (UK)

While the foundations were already in place and the steel structure calculated by the design office, a hotel project in the Trinity Square district of Gateshead (United Kingdom) turned into a cinema.

"It was not possible to change the building's footprint on the ground," said Kevin Langan, architect of 3D Reid. “In addition, the cinema, to be a success, had to be read as a separate object and become a landmark in the neighborhood, on High Street and Town Square”.

From a rather residential model with small windows, the architectural language of the building has radically evolved into a monolithic volume with large portions of blind facades behind which are the cinema screens.

The form has been softened by the introduction of breaks in the rhythm, and by plays of solid and voids, opaque and translucent, between the bronze metallic cladding and the Danpalon® ice panels.

During the day, these two surfaces, in the colors chosen for their harmony, offer variations in tones depending on the clouds and the sun. At night, the cinema reveals its activity through facades that let in light. Kevin Langan explains: “The idea is to allow the cinema operator to use the entire building as a beacon, signaling, through changes in colors and lights, the cinematographic events taking place inside and the films that are showing. This gives the building an additional quality. ”
